Drawing, Design for Mosaic Floor

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Frederick Krieg and made for (as the client) R.C. Fisher and Co.. It is dated ca. 1900 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is brush and gouache, pen and black ink, graphite on white wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Rectangular vanity case composed of a colorful assortment of semi-precious and precious materials. The top is rich green carved jadeite plaques depicting four smiling figures surrounded by lush plants and animals: a bird at left and a deer at right. The scene is studded with diamonds and bright pink cabochon rubies in platinum and gold settings. A thin line of deep blue enamel encloses the scene, continuing to the curved front edge, which is decorated with an interlocking geometric design in deep blue enamel on gold. The sides feature striped bands of orange carnelian and purple amethyst interspersed with diamonds. The thumbpiece, centered on the front edge, is similarly decorated. The short sides are deep blue, gold-flecked lapis lazuli, the same color as the enamel.

Vanity case. Carving on the case and in the center rectangle are pieces of tinted mother of pearl. The rectangle is of applied flowers with rounded corners and a border of diamonds. The thumbpiece is a single diamond. The interior has compartments for a comb and face powder.

A gold, cylindrical drum-shaped vanity case with three enamel panels. In the center is a dark blue and gold zig zag geometric panel studded with circular diamonds with a bright red border at each edge. Around the edges of the drum are two enamelled deep blue panels with a repeating emerald green foliage motif. The drum has gold ends and there is a blade-shaped thumbpiece in the center set with ten rubies and one central diamond.
