Textile, Calory Chart

This is a Textile. It was designed by Louise Phillips and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1952 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Louise Phillips, an illustrator of book covers and advertising artwork, designed her popular Calory Chart print as a submission to Youngstown Kitchens. The kitchen cabinet company selected Phillip’s work and two other designs for the launch of its collection of coordinating fabrics, wallcoverings, and decals. (1) The design was produced in multiple colorways; this one features colorful meats, produce, drinks, and desserts, displayed alongside their calorie counts on a red ground. A version with a white ground is also presented for consideration (5826.60.2016).
The July 1953 issue of Living for Young Homemakers featured an illustration of a family choosing between the three designs. (2)
Calory Chart is included in the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art’s traveling exhibition, “Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000.”
The museum currently holds one example of Phillips’s work, a textile called Pin-Ups (1994-38-7).
