Textile, Manuscript

This is a Textile. It was designed by William Ward Beecher and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1953 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

William Ward Beecher, the soldier turned self-taught trompe l’oeil expert, designed prolifically for Associated American Artists. He worked his magic in Manuscript, which depicts an assemblage of black-and-white sketches pinned to a brown bulletin board. Leaves are interspersed throughout the sketches, which show trees, pinecones, and foliage. As in many of Beecher’s signature works, the sketches and leaves seem to float above the surface of the bulletin board, then return to lie flat again, perpetually in motion.
This is one of five distinct designs by Beecher presented for consideration.

This object was donated by American Textile History Museum. It is credited American Textile History Museum Collection.

Its dimensions are
