Here we have an elegant, pyramid-like perfume bottle with black glass enamel and accented gold gilding placed on a small, square black tray. The four sloping, black enamel sides emerge from the upright, low, gilded base. On the shiny black enamel is an intricate gold floral bouquet decoration with leaves, rose, and foliage forms. Around the top neck are two thin rolls of gold gilding that widen toward the cap. The cap is a unique pyramid shape with four pointed corners and is also gilded. Accompanying the perfume bottle is a square, gold box with a slanted top and cursive inscription [Hattie Carnegie].

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Christie Mayer Lefkowith Collection as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated ca. 1925. Its medium is gilded and enameled glass.

Vienna-born American fashion entrepreneur self-named Hattie Carnegie not only provided her customers with the latest fashions but marketed her own line of perfume, made in France to her specifications.

It is credited Christie Mayer Lefkowith Collection.

A dark brown tiered semi-circular burlwood presentation case. On the upper tier are four large molded-glass flacons, reminiscent in shape of whisky liquor bottles with elaborate glass stoppers. Each flacon is labeled with a different colored semi-circular label, from left to right: burgundy, pale orange, terracotta and black, with text detailing its scent and the maker. The text from left to right reads [BITTERSWEET, SWEET, DRY, MY OWN] in capital letters in black on the first bottle, white on the next, gold on the third and white on the last. Each bottle has the words [COCKTAIL / JEAN PATOU] printed in gold capital letters. On the lower tier are six smaller rectangular molded-glass flacons with metal tops that are also labeled with different colored labels, from left to right: violet, indigo, mint green, canary yellow, red-orange and scarlet. Each bottle contains text that is illegible and an art-deco style number in black: one through seven missing the number five, which is positioned in front of the case. At the bottom of the presentation case are two semi-circular drawers that protrude out from either side, each containing a book of small paper labels. Additional accessories are found arond the front of the case including a gold stopper, more small paper labels, a pencil, a measuring tube, the number five small glass flacon with yellow label, and two small pipettes.

This is a small, clear glass perfume bottle. It is wide on the sides with subtle, symmetrical cuts and, from the front, is shaped like an upside-down umbrella. On the front, a brown, crest-like shape with the word [Shalimar] sits in the middle. The body has a clear glass foot as base support, also with angled cuts. The body tapers dramatically inward toward a small neck and its stopper: a fan-like shape made of blue glass with the words in cursive script [Guerlain, Paris].

A mixed media portrait of a standing woman, from about the waist up. The woman’s body faces to our right, with her head turned to look at us in a three-quarter view. Her light skin has a yellowish tinge. She has short waved light brown hair parted on the side and curled over her ears. She regards us with a cool expression: her thin eyebrows are arched over heavy-lidded pale blue eyes and her dark-red lips are set in a thin line. She wears a double strand of golden brown pearls and an elegant, draping dress or shawl in shades of deep blue and gold, patterned with a mix of geometric designs: waves, starburst flowers, speckles, and thin lines. The shawl is knotted around her shoulders; her right arm appears to be completely concealed by the garment. The background is mosaic-like, filled with crackled ivory-colored rectangles, shaded with warm brown dots around the edges of the painting. The upper right corner is brightest, shading into the darkest lower left corner, such that the woman’s face is highlighted.
