This is a Plate No. 1.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Smithsonian Libraries and Archives as part of Passion for the Exotic: Japonism.

It is dated 1877. Its medium is lithography on paper.

E.W. Godwin incorporated a wide range of influences in his development of "art furniture": Jacobean, Gothic, ancient Greek, as well as Chinese and Japanese culture. Twelve plates from this volume were reproduced in 1878 in the American periodical the Art-Worker, leading to the start of his strong following by American architects, decorators, and designers, including architect Henry Hobson Richardson. The bands of stylized chrysanthemums and other motifs seen here relate to the decoration on the ceramics inside the Herter Brothers bookcase nearby.

A decorative, rosewood, upholstered chair. The chair has two thin tapered legs decorated with scrolls at the front and two rectangular straight legs at the back. It has a carved seat back with a floral panel created from inlaid paler wood at the top, geometric cut out sections in the middle, and golden column-like sections in the rectangular seat supports. The seat itself is upholstered with golden silk that is decorated with a repeating floral motif in white, deep purple, brown, peach and pale blue. It is supported underneath with eight wooden strips four of which, one the left and right side, have a small panel with three holes between them.

A tan teapot whose body is vertically ovular. In red are various patterns and images, including a row of brick-like squares that extends from the bottom left of the body to the top right of it. Off of this narrow, wall-like row grows a tree. Two birds fly off of it, toward the top left of the body. Below it, in the bottom right of the body, are a thick bush of plants.
