Balaclava

This is a Balaclava. It was designed by Jörg Hartmann and manufactured by H. Stoll AG & Co. KG and design team member: Karen Klabunde, Petra Meyer and Francesco Collura. It is dated 2016 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is virgin wool, lycra, polyamide, polyester reflective yarns, copper and its technique is flat-bed knitted. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Runners, skiers, skaters, and other winter athletes run an increased risk of lung and bronchial infections when training in cold weather. This balaclava incorporates a mesh structure with copper wire that heats air to 40⁰ C (104⁰ F) before it is inhaled, decreasing the incidence of chest infections. It received the gold medal in the Outdoor Industry Awards in 2016.
The piece is part of Stoll’s Performance+ series of athletic garments, designed with academic and industry partners to showcase the unique potential of machine knitting in the advancement of smart textile technology. The balaclava has a knitted-in electric socket at the back of the head activated by a cell battery. Electro-conductive yarns so fine they cannot be felt create a mesh panel over the nose and mouth, to warm the air. Other features include 3-D constructions, wind-resistant wool-Lycra blend yarns, and knitted-in reflective stripes for passive visibility.
