Dining Chair, 1925

This is a dining chair. It is dated 1925. Its medium is bird's-eye maple, upholstery.

This chair, part of a suite for New York philanthropist Adolph Lewisohn at 881 Fifth Avenue, is modernist painter Claggett Wilson’s only known residential commission. Its pierced back slat suggests Wiener Werkstätte motifs. The residence also contained Renaissance tapestries, Chinese porcelains, Impressionist art, and antique furniture.

It is credited Collection of John C. Waddell.

A rectangular cabinet with a horizontal orientation and a wooden symmetrical checkerboard design adorning the two front doors bookending two recessed hinged inner doors of light wood. The checkerboard consists of light and medium woods; Thuya Burl and Primavera in rows of three and columns of five squares on each outer door with striated Coromandel Ebony in the form of square handles. The top consists of two squares of light wood surrounding one square of medium wood extending to the front drawer with a lock at the center top almost aligning with the lock on the right of the two recessed inner doors beneath. The front drawer was carved from a piece of wood that embodied an organic symmetrical design possessing natural veins meeting at an apex in the center. The bottom platform is a three sided rectangular form with the short sides used as legs positioned front to back with a recessed shelf underneath. The photograph captures the cabinet in a frontal view with the top exposed on an angle against a gray ground with light cast shadows surrounding the platform.
