A diamond link chain necklace with six, carved, deep green jade panels displayed on a black velvet bust. Four of the jade panels are rectangular and worn around the neck interlinked by the diamond chains. In the center is a small lonzenge shaped diamond from which the main pendant falls. The pendant is formed from a pyramidal shape encrusted with small baguette diamonds with another rectangular jade panel below, then the pyramidal diamond encrusted shape again, with a long oblong-shaped carved piece of jade attached below.

Pendant Necklace, 1920s

This is a Pendant Necklace.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Neil Lane Collection as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated 1920s. Its medium is diamonds, carved jade, platinum.

The bright green carved jade of this necklace shows that the appeal of chinoiserie and color spread to American fashion.

It is credited Neil Lane Collection.

Six matching tabletop sets. Each set is on a translucent rectilinear tray with coral balls for feet. Gold studs drilled into the tray hold the coral in place. The corners of the tray are rounded and on each tray are two upright rectangular nephrite slabs into which four holes have been drilled. Each of four cigarettes fits into the holes. The nephrite is held in place near the bottom with a long smooth bolt that has a large head. Each slab has a thin gold band near the top that goes around it. Just below the band is a small tube-set cabochon ruby. There is space behind the slab for a place card to go.

A small, pendant watch with a silver-colored circular dial with black enamel Roman numerals held in a gold case decorated with red and black enamel. Dark blue, steel hour and minute hands indicate that the time is coming up to ten past ten. The back of the watch face is attached to three interlocking jade rings on a long, black, silk cord.

This vanity case is made of blue enamel on gold with incurved corners. The top design has ten nephrite (jade) pieces carved to resemble flowers and melons. In each corner where the nephrite plaques meet is a small octagonal shaped diamond stud. On the short sides of the vanity case are a row each of rectangular buff-top sapphires and larger ones in light green jade; the thumbpiece matches that light green jade. The interior is fitted with a mirror, two powder compartments and a lipstick holder.

Called a sautoir, this necklace is longer than earlier ones to accommodate the flat front dresses of the 1920’s and 30’s. Each octagonal diamond setting surrounds a larger center stone. The octagons alternate with hollowed-out rectangular rock crystal. The clasp is an ovoid version of the octagons.
