A tall, thin, molded earthenware vase with a flared, wide lip and white floral and leaf decoration against a black glazed background. The unique flowers are portrayed as if viewed from above and arranged in individual vignettes. The flowers are intricately outlined in white with numerous petals and resemble stylized roses, crysanthemums, and sunflowers. The foot of the vase is shaped in an inverted echo of the main volume’s silhouette, with a black ringed attachment. The inside decoration in a white, cloud-like design is barely revealed due to the angle of the image, and the vase casts a light shadow toward the viewer's left side.

This is a Bell-form Vase with Black and White Decoration. It was designed by Michael Powolny and manufactured by Gmundner Keramik.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from The Newark Museum as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated ca. 1922. Its medium is molded white earthenware.

Michael Powolny’s ceramics exhibit patterns typical of those found in Wiener Werkstätte wallcoverings and textiles of the same date, but contrast with the lack of decoration seen in his glass bowl nearby. This vase was exhibited and acquired by the Newark Museum in 1923, but generally Powolny’s work was not known in the United States until later.
