Horizontally rectangular carpet. Design consists of various Tetris block-like shapes interlaid against each other. Blocks are large and colored in brown, purple, red, and yellow. On both the left and right sides of the carpet are clusters of three red, vertically-rectangular lines overlaying the block shapes.

Carpet, 1929

This is a Carpet. It was designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from The Art Institute of Chicago as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated 1929. Its medium is hemp and wool, plain weave with supplementary wrapping wefts forming cut solid pile.

The impact of the De Stijl movement can be seen in this 1929 carpet design by Edward McKnight Kauffer, who worked in collaboration with his wife, Marian Dorn Kauffer. The Kauffers, both American, met while in Paris, where they saw friend and compatriot Ruth Reeves.

It is credited Lent by The Art Institute of Chicago, Royalties from The Warner Fund, 1987.21.

Black and tan desk with side table placed on top of it. Desk consists of two black legs with tan shelves coming off of them to the sides. The top of the desk has a narrow, tan drawer with two black knobs. The top of the desk also has tan shelving coming off both sides of it. On top of the desk is a side table, which also has black legs, with tan shelves coming out of the bottom and top of the legs. In between the desk and table is an orange blotter.

A shape that resembles a backwards P is painted several times, in various sizes and colors overlapping one another. At the top is a grey version of this shape, with three red horiztonal lines intersecting its right side. Underneath the grey shape are white and yellow iterations of it. Splashes of dark pink and brown appear in the background.
