Temple of Vesta, Tivoli Architectural Model

This is a Architectural model. It is dated 1810–30 and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is pressed, carved, and cut cork with wood base. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This cork model reflects a period of renewed interest in classical design, from about 1770 to 1830, that made these models collectibles of the Grand Tour. It features meticulous workmanship and an exacting sense of proportion faithful to the original temple ruin. Often made by architects to supplement their income, these models use the color and irregular surface of cork to replicate ancient stone.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Cork for more than Wine--The Temple of Vesta, Tivoli.

This object was donated by Eugene V. Thaw and Clare E. Thaw. It is credited Gift of Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw.
