Fashion Plate, Gazette du Bon Ton, vol. 7, no. 8, Le Jugement de Pâris, plate 60

This is a fashion plate. It was illustrated by Georges Lepape.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Smithsonian Libraries and Archives as part of Making Design.

It is dated 1924. Its medium is pochoir print.

Jeanne Lanvin (1867–1946) was a French fashion designer and founder of the Lanvin fashion house, the oldest surviving couture house today. Lanvin was an innovator; she became the first couturier to create a division for fragrances as well as interior design.
The Gazette du Bon Ton, founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, featured the fashions of Lanvin, among others. The Gazette was a lavish magazine that chronicled contemporary developments in fashion, lifestyle, and beauty. It also advanced fashion illustration to a new level of refinement and sophistication. Each issue featured 10 full-page fashion plates: hand-colored pochoir prints produced by notable artists and illustrators. One such artist, Georges Lepape, was known for his illustration techniques introducing the ideas of "motion" and "story." He depicted independent women with carefree attitudes. Lepape became a primary contributor to the Gazette, later working for other well known magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. He remained a prolific artist until his death in 1971 at the age of 84.
