Paper Construction, 600 Black Spots: A Pop-up Book for Children of all Ages, Fauve Kaboom and 258 Black Spots

The simple construction forms of early pop-up books have evolved into complex paper sculptures—so much so that the term “paper engineer” has entered the lexicon of pop-up and movable books. David Carter embodies this new role. His third set of breathtaking pop-up abstracts (following One Red Dot, 2005; and Blue 2, 2006) celebrates modern art and jazz and also pays tribute to Mondrian and the Fauves. Each page contains artwork that challenges the reader to find the black spots he has incorporated into the book in varying ways: some are printed, some glued in, some move with the pull of a tab, and some are suspended on intricately intertwined threads that shift as the spread opens. The effect is WOW!
