Textile, Compartment

This is a Textile. It was designed by Maharam Design Studio and produced by Maharam. It is dated 2014 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is 100% cotton and its technique is supplementary warp pile (velvet), cut and uncut loops. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The Maharam Design Studio is known for its many textile collaborations with fashion, graphic, and furniture designers as well as artists . They also conduct their own research, engineering, design, and development of textiles for commercial and residential interiors. Balancing an appreciation of history with innovative interdisciplinary exploration, the studio focuses on utility, technology, tradition, and luxury.
This textile, Compartment, exemplifies their approach – paying homage to a Bauhaus textile tradition that revered texture, asymmetry, and geometric form. Compartment's rhythmic, rectilinear composition finds its texture and dimension through a dense cotton pile construction. It combines epingle (loops formed by the insertion of wires during the weaving process) and velvet (epingle that has been cut). The interplay of cut and uncut cotton velvet gives a sumptuousness and depth to the fabric and further enhances the colorful striped surface. Compartment was woven at MTL (Material Technology & Logistics) in Scranton, Pennsylvania -- the only mill in the US weaving velvet.

This object was donated by Maharam. It is credited Gift of Maharam.
