This handthrown earthenware vase is a tall oval-shape with a flat top. The lip is pinched into a pointed oval, and the sides pinched together to continue that line down the vase. The bottom is rounded, with a simple round foot. The vase is finely painted with a brilliant seascape in metallic glazes. Tall golden pines with umbrella-shaped foliage stand with low golden shrubs and rocks against a turquoise and violet sea, below a flaming red-orange sky darkening into deep violet-plum above. The iridescence of the glaze adds richness to the scene.

Grand Seascape with Trees Vase, ca. 1900

This is a vase. It was designed by Clément Massier. It is dated ca. 1900 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is hand-painted and metallic-glazed thrown earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This vase is one of the largest known pieces by Clément Massier, a master of iridescent glazes at the turn of the twentieth century. Massier studied historical pieces of Spanish lusterware, such as the plate to the right, under the influence of Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, his collaborator who collected these wares. This bright multidimensional vase uses different combinations of suspension materials that produced variations in color with multiple firings.

It is credited Museum purchase from Charles E. Sampson Memorial Fund and through gift of Barbara Munves, Dr. Barbra B. and Mr. Hal F. Higginbotham, and Susan Hermanos.

A molded earthenware vase with an ovoid body, rounded neck opening into an almost star-shaped mouth and two squat curving handles at the top. Abstract gold foliage is engraved into the body in the mid-lower portion alongside continuous stipples in gold. The vase is glazed and lustered with a pink-purple and green iridescent color, which graduates from pink at the top to green at the bottom.
