Spun

This is a Spun. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and Thomas Heatherwick and collaborator: Haunch of Venison. It is dated 2007–2011. Its medium is spun metal.

Can a rotationally symmetrical form make a comfortable chair?
Metal spinning is used to make circular objects such as timpani drums and gas cylinders. The studio wondered if it could use this technique to make a chair with a completely symmetrical rotational form. Experimentation produced an ergonomic form that works as a seat regardless of its orientation. At college, Heatherwick studied with a silversmith skilled at making large objects. Working with Haunch of Venison gallery, the studio used metal spinning to produce a series of unique highly finished pieces in different metals and, in collaboration with Italian furniture manufacturer Magis, they developed a rotation-molded chair in plastic.
