Model DCM Side Chair Side Chair, 1951

This is a side chair. It was designed by Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser Eames and manufactured by Herman Miller Furniture Company. It is dated 1951. Its medium is birch plywood, calfskin, chrome-plated metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Charles Eames drew hundreds of studies to achieve the ideal contours of the seat and the back panel for the DCM. Both panels appear caught in the middle between shapes; the back as a morphing between an oval and a rectangle and the seat as a merger between a square and squat circle. The final result achieves visual and formal balance as well as comfort for the seated body. However defined, these chair components have been articulated in a variety of materials. One of the great design advantages to the Eames plywood group was its overall variability. Seats and bases acted as a set of modular parts and could be reconfigured with one another. This DCM has a calfskin seat whose texture sets it apart from the more familiar metal and wooden seats of this form. The use of animal skin as upholstery provides texture and a hint of exoticism that the husband and wife team cultivated in their approach to the domestic environment. Case Study House No. 8, the Eames’ triumph in architecture and interior design, included rugs in animal skin, shown in conjunction with their furniture and an eclectic mix of multi-cultural artifacts.
