Black ST201 Television Set With Case

This is a Television Set with Case. It was designed by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper and manufactured by Brionvega, S.p.A.. It is dated 1969 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is acrylic, metal, plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The ST201 television designed by Maco Zanuso and Richard Sapper for Brionvega represents a complete embrace of both form and function in the design of this mechanical object. When turned off, the ST201 sits as an elegantly proportioned, monolithic sculpture. When turned on, the black and white televised image glows from within the cube and does not appear so much as something applied to the screen, but rather, as something integral to the design and construction of the television itself. Zanuso and Sapper collaborated on many industrial design objects for twenty years, and approached each project with the same criteria as they did for the st201. First and foremost, the object had to function. Once its working mechanisms were established, they felt an obligation to bring this functionality into an aesthetic framework that respected proportion and scale. And finally, the materials and manufacturing process had to reflect the most advanced technical capabilities of the time. The st201 is a true exemplar of this spirit with which Zanuso and Sapper approached every project they worked on together.
