Heimat Brooches and Holder Brooches And Holder

This is a brooches and holder. It was designed by Iris Eichenberg. It is dated 2004 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is metal, thread skeins, cardboard (box). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

With Eichenberg’s brooches from the Heimat series (roughly translated as Home or Homeland) one enters a very personal world where thread and other components, presented in a sewing box-like container, are suggestive of warmth and healing.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

In lower half a black and white photograph cutout of an individual with hair in updo, in apron and rolled up sleeves, removing tray of round baked goods from oven; set over blue background. Top half is composed of red polka dots on white background, with a large, thick, blue, diagonal, line with rounded ends filled with white text: 'A Better Home'. Bottom edge filled in red and width filled with two rows of black text: 'RURAL ELEXTRIFICATION ADMINISTRATION / U.S. Department of Agriculture'.
