Sidewall - Sample, Sunflower, 1887
This is a Sidewall - sample. It was designed by Morris & Co. and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1887 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is block-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Design reformer William Morris reacted against the garish synthetic colors which were introduced in the 1850s. He promoted a return to natural dyes, resulting in the subdued color combinations which were his firm’s signature.
It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Regents Collections Acquisition Fund.
