At the center of the hunting scene of this engraving, a rampant male lion is biting into the belly of a man who is falling to the ground, while three horseman attack the lion with spears. The falling man's eyes are wide open and face the viewer. On the lower left corner, a lion or lioness is fighting with a man holding up a dagger, while a second armed man on foot approaches from the left. In the lower right corner, a man lies apparently lifeless on the ground. The two lions, four horses, and seven men are depicted in a close cluster, with their muscular bodies entwined in an impetuous battle that captures the fear of death. In the background, rocky outcrops, sparse shrubs and trees, and a cloudy sky. The dramatic scene reminds of the 'Lion Hunt' painting by Peter Paul Rubens.
