The Danish furniture company Fritz Hansen (also known as Republic of Fritz Hansen) was founded in 1872 by cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen, who is often referred to as the “father of Danish style”. The company originally specialized in wood turning and in the production of furniture frames in wood and iron for upholstery. When Christian E. Hansen, the son of the founder, became involved, the company introduced new industrial processes, and began experimenting with bent wood. The company went on to introduce a clean, functional line. This is called an egg chair and is upholstered in brown fabric. It has a curved, organic look. The chair is constructed of steel, cotton and latex foam. It allows the sitter to sink into its depths, which almost embraces him or her. There are inward curves above each armrest, which lead to wings. The wide, high wings arc to the right and left, separated by a downward curve at the back of the chair. The bottom of the chair and matching ottoman are ovoid, in keeping with the look of an egg. The metal base of each is a shaft with four splayed feet.
