Iceland-based Össur is a developer and manufacturer of orthopedic and prosthetic devices, founded in 1971 by prosthetist Össur Kristinsson. Initially serving the domestic market in Iceland, the company began to export in 1986, and today has research, manufacturing and distribution locations throughout the world. In 2000, Össur bought the American company, Flex-Foot Incorporated, developer of the Flex-Foot Cheetah, a high performance running prosthetic made of a carbon composite. Össur still produces the Flex-Foot Cheetah and its variants, and is recognized as an innovator in the field of prosthetics technologies.
