Ronan Bouroullec | People | Collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

Brothers and designers, Ronan (b. 1971) and Erwan (b. 1976) Bouroullec, were born and raised in Quimper, France. During their studies at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise, they collaborated in several independent design projects. In 1999, they officially joined as partners and established their own design firm. Ronan and Erwan’s collaboration is enriched by their distinct hard-working personalities and shared aspirations for producing high-quality, balanced design. Teal cloud like form constructed from hexagonal folded puzzle pieces suspended in mid-air. On the left, a pair of legs in black pants and black dress shoes peek out from below. Each puzzle piece is made up of two hexagons with six-fold lines radiating from a cental point. Long tabs with rounded edges are affixed between each point. Pieces are attached by a band looped around overlapping tabs. The pieces are folded both in an out creating lighter and darker shaded sections. The overall pattern appears like a topographical map with mountains and valleys formed from hundreds of triangles. The lines created by the connections between pieces look like constellations, light shining through at points like stars. The installation is in a white room with a shiny white floor. The cloud creates a long shadow on the floor.
