Launched in 2016 by the Luma Foundation, Atelier Luma is a think tank and cross-disciplinary center in Arles, France, that builds on local resources, materials, and skills to create sustainable ways of utilzing natural and cultural resources of the region to solve global environmental issues. Atelier Luma went on to found Algae Lab in 2017, to develop locally grown algae-based biopolymers in an effort to replace petrochemical plastics. One of Algae Lab's goals is to offer a "library" of algae and living materials for use by designers, scientists and other experts to carry out research.
